Legal help for veterans

The Illinois Armed Forces Legal Aid Network (IL-AFLAN) operates statewide via a hotline and network of service providers and provides free legal aid for those who cannot afford an attorney who are members of the military, veterans, national guard, reserve, or the spouse or dependent of the preceding. Eligibility is limited to those with 80% of Chicago Area Median Income or lower (applies statewide) and any discharge status except for dishonorable. IL-AFLAN handles all civil matters, including discharge upgrades and VA benefits appeals.

At current call volume, hotline attorneys are speaking with a caller in about seven minutes. If call volume is very high, the caller will never wait longer than 10 minutes –they will be prompted to set a call-back time. Please help spread the word and make sure that those seeking legal aid are aware of this service.

For help, please call the attorney-staffed hotline when you have time to talk with a lawyer and have any relevant documents in front of you. Call between Monday and Friday from 9 am to 4:30 pm at (855) 452-3526.
